One of the biggest and often most underestimated impacts of Yoga is its effect on the practitioner long after the class is finished. Those who practice Yoga regularly experience general feelings of calm, clarity of mind, the ability to be more present along with other positive side effects such as: better sleep, ease of physical tension and reduced stress. For these same regular practitioners, it becomes quickly apparent that there is a lot more to Yoga than simply the poses. A certain magic happens when we link slow and controlled movement to breath, and for many the more this is experienced the further we are called to explore deeper concepts of Yoga, such as Yoga Philosophy and the 8-Limbs of Yoga.

The first two limbs and our focus for this workshop are about our social and personal code of ethics. In essence how to live pure of heart, in respect of our brothers and sisters and also in respect of our self. Some consider the Yamas and Niyamas to be a yogi moral compass. Concepts include: non-harming, truth, non-attachment, moderation, discipline + surrender.

The Yamas, are the ways in which we interact with our external world. Translated from Sanskrit to mean restraints, the Yamas are guidelines for Yogi’s to follow that are based in compassion and equality. These are practiced as guide posts along our Yoga journey, to have us continually checking in with both our thoughts and our actions.The Niyamas ask us to look inward at our habits or samskaras and how we treat ourselves. It is a success plan to cultivate happiness and self-confidence. They can be used as guide posts for when we are feeling a little off centre, or practices for everyday self-care.  

Each session will open with a grounding meditation followed by an in-depth discussion on each of the Yamas (5) and Niyamas (5) over the course of 4-weeks. Pour yourself a cup of tea and settle in with your journal and cozy blanket. Link to live feed will be sent on the morning of the workshop via Zoom. Please ensure you have access to an internet feed, microphone and speaker. Please log on a few minutes early in order to test your device. A recording of the session will be provided for anyone unable to log into the live feed. 

Included in the series is Lisa’s brand new un-released Yama + Niyamas workbook to be sent via email on the morning of January 18th.

January 18: Ahimsa (non-violence) + Satya (truth)
January 25: Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (moderation) + Aparigraha (non-coveting)
February 1: Saucha (purity) + Santosha (contentment)
February 8: Tapas (discipline), Svadyaya (self-study) + Isvara Pranidhana (surrender)

This series is open to everyone interested in learning more about Yoga! no experience required. Registered Yoga Teachers are eligible to receive 6 CECs through Yoga Alliance.
